Managed by Network Rail, the rail operator runs one of the busiest railway networks in Europe, more than 1.33 billion rail journeys took place on Britain's railways in 2010, making it the fifth busiest in the world.
There are 2,516 railway stations excluding the London Underground, with the majority situated either in, or at the edge of cities and towns, including Birmingham New Street, London Euston, Waterloo, Paddington, and London's iconic St. Pancras station.
