M74 Traffic

The M74 motorway is one of the most important motorways in Scotland, connecting Glasgow to England via the A74(M). It was opened in 1966 as a replacement to the previous A74 trunk road, and extended with the completion of a short bypass around Kilmarnock in 2011.

Safety statistics on the M74 are generally positive. In the 12 months leading to May 2020, there were only two fatal accidents and no serious injuries reported along the road. This is despite the motorway's high volumes of traffic. The overall road safety record on the M74 is much better than the national average for major roadways.

If you're caught by the police using any device that can send or receive data whilst driving or riding a motorcyle you'll get an automatic fixed penalty notice, 6 points on your licence and a fine of £200. A court could also disqualify you from driving.
