M65

The M65 motorway is a 43.1 mile (69.4km) long stretch of motorway situated in northwest England in the cities of Lancaster, Blackburn, and Preston. It was opened in 1971, and it runs east-west between the M61 at Junction 8, near the interchange at Bamber Bridge (south of Preston), and the M6 at Junction 31, near the interchange at Lancaster, in Lancashire.

The M65 motorway has become a crucial artery for traffic in the region, with average daily traffic on the motorway in 2020 estimated to be around 81,000 vehicles. Over the years, there have been many safety improvements to the M65 to reduce fatalities and collisions and make the road safer for all users.

In 2004, the Highways Agency (now Highways England) began a major 84 million safety programme to install safety measures such as hard-shoulder running, installation of central barriers and rumble strips, plus proactive speed cameras to reduce fatal and serious injury collisions. The programme contributed to a reduction in collisions by 37%, as well as a reduction in average speed.
