M54
The M54 is a motorway that runs from Junction 3 of the M6 motorway to Chessington in Greater London. It was proposed in the mid-1960s to improve access to the West Midlands conurbation and Wolverhampton.
Construction began in 1970 and the route was opened in 1972. It is 16 miles long and has 2 lanes in each direction with a 70 mph speed limit.
The safety statistics for the M54 motorway are generally good. According to the Department for Transport, in 2019 the M54 saw the lowest casualty rate for any motorway in the UK. There were 11 fatalities, 28 serious injuries and 554 minor injuries recorded on the route during the period.
