M48
The M48 motorway is a short motorway in the South West of England. It runs from the M4 at Hambrook, near Bristol, to a junction with the M5 motorway at Avonmouth, a distance of approximately 17.5 miles (28 km).
The motorway was opened in two stages, the first in 1974 and the second in 1985. It is a two-lane motorway throughout, but is wide enough for traffic to pass safely.
The M48 motorway has an average daily traffic flow of 61,272 vehicles, a relatively low figure compared to other motorways in the UK. The safety record on the M48 motorway is good, consistently ranking within the top five motorways in the UK in terms of lowest rates of accident and injury. In the five years between 2013 and 2017, the M48 saw 84 accidents, of which 33 were serious and one was fatal.
