A55
The A55 is a major road in the UK running from Chester in the North West to Bangor in North Wales. It is a vital part of the North Wales Expressway, and serves as a direct connection between North Wales and all the major cities in the North West.
The A55 has been an important part of the road network in North Wales since 1959, when it opened as the North Wales Expressway. At first, the road was just a single-carriageway, but it was soon widened in stages to dual carriageway, and then in some sections to an all-purpose motorway. It was completed in 1978, when the final sections were finished.
The busiest times on the A55 are during peak hours on weekdays, when traffic is busy travelling to and from North Wales, particularly the cities and towns along the North Wales coast. Traffic is also generally heavier during holiday periods, when the road is often used by holidaymakers heading to North Wales.
The A55 has a good safety record, and accidents on the A55 are rare. In 2018, there were only five fatalities on the road. Since then, the Welsh Government has invested heavily in further improving road safety along the A55, with speed restrictions and extra signage at certain points, making it one of the safest roads in the UK.
