The A406, also known as the North Circular Road, is a circular route in Greater London, England, running from Chiswick in the west to Woolwich in the east. It was designed to reduce traffic congestion in the centre of London and provide a bypass for long-distance traffic.
The A406 was first built in 1922, but the majority of the route was opened in 1925. In the 1960s and 70s there were significant improvements made to the A406 and it was extended to reach Chiswick in the west and to bypass Neasden in the east. The A406 was widened from four lanes to six in 2006.
The A406 is currently the busiest single A-road in the UK, and is used by over 150,000 vehicles per day. Traffic flow is heaviest around rush hour periods, and is busiest in the east around Enfield, Southgate and Woodford, and around Dollis Hill in the west.
Safety statistics for the A406 remain reasonable. Between 2015-2019, there were 95 fatal and serious collisions on the A406, with approximately 22.7 collisions per km per year. This is lower than the UK average, making the A406 one of the safer roads in the UK.
