The A404 (also known as the Amersham Road) is a major road in Buckinghamshire and Middlesex, England. It runs between the A40 at High Wycombe on the outskirts of London and the M40 motorway at Wycombe Marsh, near to Loudwater. The A404 was first built in the 1930s as an extension of the old Watford By-Pass, connecting it to the M40 at Wycombe Marsh. In 1993 the road was widened from dual to four lanes, greatly improving the traffic flow.
Today, the A404 is a heavily used route, especially during rush hours. Between 8am and 9am, and 4pm and 6pm, the road experiences the heaviest traffic flows.
In terms of safety statistics, preliminary results from the Road Safety Foundation’s Annual Status Report (2020) show that there were two fatalities, five serious injuries and 27 slight injuries reported on the A404 in the past three years. The safety record of the road is just above average, with the department for Transport's Road Safety Indicators rating it 9th out of 18 primary A roads.
