The A129 road in the UK links Brentwood to Rayleigh and is a popular route for commuters. The route is about 10 miles long and passes through the towns of Hockley, Rochford, and Hadleigh.
The A129 has a long and varied history. Originally, it was part of the Roman Road which passed through Essex, connecting London to Colchester and also Camulodunum—now known as Colchester. During the 16th century, it was part of the New Road which was constructed by the British Government and was used to connect towns and cities in England.
Today, the A129 is a popular route for commuters, as well as a popular route for lorries wanting to access ports and industrial estates in Essex. Therefore, the busiest times on the A129 are during peak commuting periods in the morning and evening, as well as during the weekend when delivery traffic increases.
Traffic on the A129 is generally free-flowing but it can become congested during peak times. Safety on the A129 is generally good and accident rates are relatively low. However, there are sections of the road which can be considered dangerous due to narrow lanes, sharp bends, and blind corners. The overall road fatality rate in 2017 was 0.12 deaths per million vehicle miles, which is lower than the national average.
