The A125 is a primary route running from Leigh in Greater Manchester to Southend in Essex. The A125 was built between 1865 and 1876 as the main thoroughfare for Leigh. In the 1950s the section of road running between Leigh and Romford was temporarily closed for a period of time and a diversion was in place.
The busiest times for the A125 is usually during rush hour periods, with long delays in both directions during peak times. The A125 is known as a congested routewith traffic flow often slow due to the volume of vehicles.
According to the Department for Transport, the safety statistics of the A125 is generally good, with the rate of accidents lower than the national average. However, there were 10 fatal accidents on the A125 between 2012 and 2016.
