The A118 is a road located in east London and Essex, England, connecting the A12 with the North Circular Road (A406) at Redbridge roundabout. It is also known as Romford Road and forms part of the London Outer Orbital Path.
The A118 has a long history dating back to the pre-motorised era. In the 18th century, the road was used by mail coaches travelling between London and the Essex towns of Brentwood and Romford. The road was first improved in the 1930s by widening and removing a lot of the bends and meanders of the old road. In the 1950s, it was further improved to accommodate increasing levels of traffic.
Morning rush hour typically sees the heaviest traffic on the A118, as commuters travel into London for work. Evening rush hour sees the heaviest return traffic, with people heading to the borough of Havering and beyond. The average speed of the A118 during normal conditions is around 45-50 mph. The road is often congested during peak times, however, with traffic on the road and at traffic lights known to be slow moving.
The A118 has a safety record in line with the national average. Between June 2017 and May 2018, there were 28 reported casualties and 11 personal injury collisions. All casualties occurred during daylight hours and four of them were during peak times. In addition, during the same period, there were a total of 42 incidents reported with the main causes being following too close, speeding and vehicle defects.
