The A117 road is a major A road in the west of England, running from junction 32 of the M25 in Bell Common, Epping Forest to Vange roundabout, Basildon. It is approximately 38 miles long.
The A117 has been in existence for many years and forms an important link between Essex and London. The stretch from Loughton to Vange is mostly single carriageway, and passes through numerous towns and villages.
The busiest times on this road are during the weekdays with peak times in the morning (7- 9am) and evening rush hours (4-7pm). It is usually much quieter at weekends.
The traffic flow on the A117 varies according to the time of day and day of the week. During peak times it can be very busy and slow moving, as it is a major route into London and Essex. However, during the quieter times, the flow is usually smooth and drivers can make good time.
In terms of safety, the A117 has seen a steady decrease in accidents in recent years. During 2015-2018, the road saw 36 reported casualties and 21 of those involved serious injury. This compares to 42 casualties in 2014-2017, with 28 of those resulting in serious injury.
