The A102 is a major road in London, England which links the A2 at New Cross to the M11 motorway at Redbridge, via Bow and Stratford. The route follows a 9.2-mile arc southwards, passing through several residential and industrial areas.
The A102 was built in the 1920s to provide a link between the Blackwall Tunnel and the North Circular Road. Over the years, the road has become a heavily used route in South East London.
During peak times, the A102 becomes very congested, particularly around the Stratford and Greenwich areas due to the number of commuters using the route. Heavy congestion also occurs at New Cross due to the main junction of the A2 which links the east and south London, as well as at Bow due to the traffic from the East London line.
According to recent statistics, the A102 was identified as an area of high casualty risk with a three-year average of 54 yearly serious injuries or fatalities per 100 miles, higher than the average for London at 23 per 100 miles. The main causes for accidents on this road include driver error and over-speeding.
In response to this increased safety risk, the road has undergone major improvements in recent years, such as the installation of pedestrian crossing facilities, speed cameras and traffic signals. These have helped improve safety and reduce the number of accidents on the route.
